What Is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific conditions. It helps pay for many essential health services, but it doesn’t automatically cover everything — and the way you enroll and choose your coverage can affect your costs for years.

You may qualify for Medicare when you turn 65, after receiving Social Security Disability benefits for at least 24 months, or if you have conditions such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS. Depending on your situation, you might be enrolled automatically or you may need to actively sign up during specific enrollment windows.

Because there are different parts, plan options, and deadlines, having a trusted guide like Yoly González can help you avoid costly mistakes, compare your choices, and build a Medicare strategy that supports your doctors, medications, and budget — in the language you’re most comfortable with.

The Four Parts of Medicare

Part A — Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health care.

Part B — Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment.

Part C — Medicare Advantage

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers — often includes drug coverage.

Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs through private plans approved by Medicare.

Fill the Gaps with a Medigap Plan

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) helps with many costs, but you’re still responsible for deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan is offered by private insurers and is designed to help pay some or all of those remaining out-of-pocket expenses, giving you more predictable healthcare costs.

With the right Medigap plan, you can see any provider who accepts Medicare, travel with greater peace of mind, and worry less about surprise bills after a hospital stay or doctor visit. Yoly will walk you through each standardized Medigap option and help you find the level of protection that fits your needs.

  • Helps pay Medicare Part A and B deductibles, copays, and coinsurance
  • Lets you visit any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, nationwide
  • Can reduce surprise bills after hospital stays or specialist visits
  • Personalized guidance from Yoly to compare plans and pricing

When to Enroll in Medicare

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your IEP is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. Enrolling during this time helps you avoid late penalties and coverage gaps.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

If you miss your IEP, you can sign up for Parts A and B between January 1 and March 31 each year. Coverage typically starts the month after you enroll, and you may face late-enrollment penalties.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

You may qualify for a SEP if you delay Medicare because you have qualifying employer coverage, or if you move, lose coverage, or experience other life events. SEPs give you a limited time to enroll or change plans without penalties.

Common Medicare Mistakes to Avoid

Missing Your Initial Enrollment Window

Waiting too long to sign up for Medicare Part B or Part D can lead to lifelong late-enrollment penalties. Yoly helps you track your dates and enroll on time.

Not Comparing Part D Plans

Drug plans vary widely in cost and which medications they cover. Jolly Coverage reviews your prescriptions and helps match you with a plan that fits.

Skipping Medigap When You Need It

If you want Medigap later, you may have to answer health questions or pay more. Yoly helps you decide early whether a supplement is right for you.

Choosing a Plan Without Local Doctors

Some plans limit which doctors and hospitals you can see. Together, you and Yoly check your providers and preferred hospitals in South Florida before you enroll.

Medicare FAQs

When should I sign up for Medicare?

Most people should sign up during their Initial Enrollment Period, which begins 3 months before the month you turn 65. If you have qualifying employer coverage, your situation may be different — Yoly can review your timing and help you avoid penalties.

What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one plan from private insurers that replaces your Original Medicare and often includes drug coverage and extra benefits, but may use networks. Medigap works with Original Medicare to help pay your out-of-pocket costs, and usually lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare.

Does Medicare cover dental and vision?

Original Medicare does not generally cover routine dental, vision, or hearing services. Some Medicare Advantage plans or standalone ancillary plans can include these benefits — Yoly can help you compare your options.

Can I change my Medicare plan?

Yes. Each year, the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) allows many people to change Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plans. Special Enrollment Periods may also apply after life changes, moves, or plan changes.

What if I’m still working at 65?

If you or your spouse has qualifying employer coverage, you may be able to delay some parts of Medicare without penalty. Because rules can be tricky, Yoly will review your employer coverage and guide you on when to enroll in each part.

Is Medicare free?

Most people do not pay a premium for Part A if they or a spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes long enough. However, Part B, Part D, Medigap, and many Medicare Advantage plans have premiums, deductibles, copays, or coinsurance that Yoly can help you understand and plan for.
